Angels’ third base Anthony Randon will undergo surgery on his right wrist next week, the team said. The procedure will remove Randon for the rest of the 2022 season.
Randon spent two weeks on the list of injured with pain in the same wrist earlier this season, and he missed the last few games after deepening the problem again. Angels manager Phil Nevin hinted that Rendon was possible to pinch yesterday, so today’s news comes as an unwanted surprise and indication that further tests have revealed a more serious problem with Rendon’s wrist.
This will mark the second consecutive season interrupted by surgery for Rendon, as he underwent hip surgery last August, which ended his season prematurely in 2021. This year has already been cut short by multiple trips to IL for groin, knee and knee injuries. the hamstring, with Randon’s thigh eventually bearing the weight as he tried to compensate for these other lower body problems.
Randon will finish the season with a .228 / .324 / .383 slash and five home runs for 188 appearances. Although this still works for above-average offensive production (106 wRC +), it is far below standard Rendon still during its heyday with the Nationals or even in its first Angels season in 2020. Since the start of the 2021 campaign, Rendon has hit only .235 / .327 / .383 in 437 PA and has played in only 103 games.
