Waterloo Regional Police officers went door-to-door in Waterloo’s university district Saturday morning handing out leaflets with safety tips, following a series of disturbing incidents.
Police say there have been several reports of someone peeking through windows in the area of Hickory Street and Austin Drive.
“We’re tipping around, you know, first and foremost being aware and reporting any suspicious activity,” Chief of Staff Eugene Fenton said. “Making sure you close the blinds at the end of the evening if you have blinds. Consider installing motion sensor lighting.
From July 3 to 14, there were four incidents of people in private residences peeking through windows.
“Which is obviously concerning,” Fenton said. “When we’ve had a series of these types of incidents, we want to make sure that the public is firstly aware of it and secondly that we’ve done our part in giving these people the right safety advice.”
The latest incident happened on Wednesday evening. Police have released photos of a man seen peering into windows and are hoping someone can help identify the man in the images.
“This will help us continue our investigation and identify these individuals and determine what their motives were,” Fenton said.
According to police, peeping in someone’s window is a felony and can lead to nighttime trespassing charges.
Residents who live in the university district say the situation is “grim”.
“I have two kids,” said one resident. “Without a moment’s observation, you never know what people can do. Dangerous world out there.
Some residents say they are grateful police are taking the necessary steps to get the word out.
“It’s good to let people know and make sure they’re aware of what’s going on,” another resident said.
Officials are reminding people to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity.
