The World Conference of Apple 2022 Developers started as usual – with many details about the next upgrade of the operating system: iOS 16. It will debut this fall after spending the summer in beta testing, offering more customization options, improved lock screen widgets, and some welcome Messages updates for people prone to typos among us.
The lock screen is at the heart of Apple’s iOS 16 updates, starting with the ability to customize the fonts and colors used. You will be able to add widgets and configure multiple lock screens, which you can switch between by swiping across the screen. Different focus modes can also be assigned to different lock screens. Apple-supplied wallpapers also get refreshing, with animated and themed pride options.
Notifications are also displayed on the lock screen in different ways. Instead of accumulating on the screen, they “roll up” at the bottom of the screen. There is also a “live activity” feature to display notifications related to an event such as a trip with Uber or a sports event in one tile.

A major update on messages is also forthcoming: iOS 16 adds the ability to edit typos from sent messages, retrieve messages you didn’t want to send, and the ability to mark a thread with messages as unread so you can return to -Late. SharePlay also comes in messages.
Apple’s powerful Live Text feature will appear in the video. In addition, there will be more actions available when using Live Text in photos or videos. Wallet also gets some advanced features, with a way to securely share stored ID numbers by providing only the information you need. It will be easier to share saved keys as well. Apple Pay gets a new “Pay Later” feature by adding the option to split the account into four equal payments without interest or fees. Apple Maps will get multi-stop routing in iOS 16, and six more cities will be added to the “detailed city experience” introduced in iOS 15.
Apple is also adding shared photo libraries to iCloud to make it easier for family and friends to share certain photos. Photos will include suggestions for sharing, and image edits and keywords will be synced for all users.
In iOS 16, users can sync photos between accounts in shared iCloud image libraries.
There is also a new feature called Safety Check, which aims to protect people in situations of abuse. It allows you to easily revoke access to certain information, such as a location that you may have shared with someone else before.
iOS 16 will be available this fall for the iPhone 8 and later, and will likely debut alongside the iPhone 14 series, which is rumored to offer an always-on display for the first time on the iPhone.
