Apple’s stunning iPhone 14 design solution suddenly makes sense

Apple is gambling big with the iPhone 14, which I think will anger many users. But now we know why …

According to a new TrendForce report (seen by MacRumors), conflicting claims that Apple is equipping the iPhone 14 with the same A15 chip used in the iPhone 13 are not entirely accurate. The study says a fine but important upgrade will be made.

TrendForce reports that the iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Max will receive a 50% increase in RAM compared to the iPhone 13 and iPhone 13 Mini from 2021:

  • iPhone 13, iPhone 13 Mini: 4GB (LPDDR4X)
  • iPhone 14, iPhone 14 Max: 6 GB (LPDDR4X)

This increased RAM is what Apple uses in the iPhone 13 Pro models, which means that Apple can launch the iPhone 14 with “Pro-level performance” at a more affordable price. In addition, this additional RAM has very clear real-world benefits when tested, and my hunch is that Apple will pair it with the iPhone 13 Pro’s 5-core GPU versus the iPhone 13’s 4-core GPU.

Yes, technically it’s still last year’s hardware, but at least there are significant increases – something that will be crucial if Apple really plans to rebrand the chip.

On the other hand, the performance gap between the iPhone 14 Pro and non-Pro models still looks set to increase. This is because the second part of the TrendForce report claims that Apple will upgrade the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max to LPDDR5 RAM, which is 1.5 times faster (6400 vs. 4266 Mbps) than LPDDR4x, as well as more energy efficient.

Combine that with the transition of the Pro models to the new A16 chip and “switching to the Pro” will mean significantly more in 2022 than with any previous generation iPhone. Other exclusive iPhone 14 Pro models include a new design, improved cameras and a significant increase in price.

Despite all this, the regulatory changes that are likely to be imposed on Apple in 2023 mean that I personally would avoid all iPhone models this year. But I estimate that it will be difficult to resist the lure of the new iPhone 14 Pros.
