Nearly double the normal number of health personnel called sick to work in internal health last week because of COVID-19, putting more pressure on the already stretched and thin health care system.
During a period of questioning in the British Columbia legislature on Wednesday afternoon, the MLA of the Kelowna mission, Renee Maryfield, pressured Prime Minister John Horgan and Health Minister Adrian Dix to acknowledge that the province was in a “health crisis”, passing on what was heard from the emergency doctor at Kelowna Hospital, Dr. Jeffrey Eppler.
“I have never seen morale lower than now and I have never seen such a turnover,” Maryfield was quoted as saying by Dr. Eppler, adding that “KGH is full of more patients than stretchers.”
In response, Dix said the province’s healthcare system faces “fundamental challenges”.
