Armed man at large after shooting 2 people, 1 deadly, on train in San Francisco

The search continued Thursday for a gunman who shot dead two people, one deadly, on a crowded Mooney train in San Francisco on Wednesday, police said.

The shooting happened around 10 a.m. while the light train was moving between stations, according to San Francisco police spokeswoman Catherine Winters.

Winters said police were originally called to Forest Hill Moni City Station to signal a shooting, but the train had already left. Police caught up with the train at the busy Castro Street station, where they found the two victims, Winters said.

Late Wednesday, police released a photo of a person of interest in the shooting.

Winters said the shooter and the passengers on board the train fled as soon as it stopped and the doors opened at the station.

Winters said one victim, a man, was pronounced dead at the scene. The second man was taken to Zuckerberg General Hospital and Trauma Center in San Francisco with non-life-threatening injuries.

The shooting took place ahead of a pride parade this Sunday in San Francisco and in the heart of the city’s popular Castro district, which is expected to be full of LGBTQ pride celebrations this weekend. Winters said preliminary evidence showed the shooting had nothing to do with the weekend’s activities or was aimed at the city’s LGBTQ community.

San Francisco superintendent Mirna Melgar told the ABC station KGO-TV in San Francisco that police had informed her that the shooting took place during a confrontation the shooter had with the victim, who died.

“We know that the shooting took place after a heated verbal argument,” Melgar said.

It is not immediately clear whether the shooter and the dead victim know each other. She said the second victim, who was injured, was an innocent passer-by.

Winters said Wednesday that homicide detectives are providing video footage of surveillance from the train and Forest Hill and Castro stations, hoping there are footage from the shooting that could help them identify the attacker.

Police released a vague description of the perpetrator, saying he was a man wearing dark clothes and a hooded sweatshirt.

Melgar asked all passengers who were on the train and witnessed the shooting to contact the police immediately.
