Another hot spell is headed for British Columbia, prompting the province’s Ministry of Public Safety to warn residents to have a heating plan ready as temperatures soar this weekend.
A statement on Tuesday said extreme heat was not expected, but heat warnings were possible for some areas starting as early as Saturday and continuing into next week.
It says the heat plan is “critical” and people should identify cool areas in their homes and in nearby community centers or libraries.
The plan should also identify vulnerable family members and neighbors who are at risk of heat illness and need regular checkups, and include ways to cool down, such as taking a shower and drinking plenty of water.
The province announced a heat warning system in June to determine temperature ranges and government responses during heat warnings or emergencies after the Coroners Service said more than 600 people died during an extreme heat wave last summer .
Environment Canada said heat in the mid-to-high 20s should reach the southern coast and parts of the northern interior by next week, while the Okanagan, central and southeastern British Columbia could see temperatures topping the high 30s during the same week. period.
