Ashton Kutcher revealed on a new episode of National Geographic’s Running Wild With Bear Grylls: The Challenge that he was diagnosed with a rare form of vasculitis nearly two years ago. The disease left the actor unable to hear or see for an extended period of time. Kutcher said it took almost a year to recover from the illness.
“Like two years ago I had a weird, super rare form of vasculitis that knocked out my vision, my hearing, and my whole balance,” Kutcher said. “It took me about a year to rebuild it. You don’t really appreciate it until it’s gone, until you say to yourself, “I don’t know if I’ll ever be able to see again; I don’t know if I’ll ever be able to hear again; I don’t know if I’ll ever be able to walk again.
Kutcher added that he was “lucky to be alive.” Vasculitis is an autoimmune disease that causes inflammation of the blood vessels. Various diseases such as Kogan syndrome fall under the category of vasculitis. Kutcher did not reveal the specifics of his diagnosis.
“The moment you start to see your obstacles as things that were created for you to give you what you need, that’s when life starts to get fun,” Kutcher added of her personal growth since her diagnosis. “You start surfing over your problems instead of living under them.”
Kutcher recently appeared in a supporting role in the BJ Novak directorial film Revenge. He will soon reprise his breakout role as Michael Kelso in That ’90s Show, the upcoming Netflix series sequel to That ’70s Show.
“It was really nostalgic to be back on set,” Kutcher told Variety at the red carpet premiere of “Revenge” last month. “The same people did That ’70s Show, so it was pretty weird.”
Kutcher went on to explain that he and his wife, his ’70s Show co-star Mila Kunis, felt returning the property was the right thing to do. As the actor said, “Mila and I were thinking about it. We thought, ‘Look, we’re in the position we’re in just because of this show, so let’s just go back and do this. We have just returned and enjoyed a week. It was so random and fun.”
