Baby P’s mother Tracy Connolly released from prison | UK news

Baby P’s mother Tracy Connolly has been released from prison, the Department of Justice has confirmed.

Connolly was jailed in 2009 for causing or allowing the death of her 17-month-old son Peter, who suffered more than 50 injuries, including broken ribs and a broken back.

The 40-year-old was released on license in 2013 but was returned to prison just two years later for breaching her parole conditions.

The Parole Board approved her release and rejected an appeal against Justice Minister Dominic Raab’s decision.

Mr Raab said in a statement: “Tracey Connolly’s cruelty was pure evil, which is why I strongly opposed her release.

“The decision to release her demonstrates why the Parole Board needs fundamental change, including ministerial block, to protect the public and keep dangerous offenders off our streets.”

Connolly must abide by 20 license conditions, including wearing an electronic tag and disclosing all his connections.

Her internet and phone use will be monitored and she has been told she cannot go to certain places to “avoid contact with victims and protect children”.

In March, the Parole Board decided Connolly was eligible for release – after rejecting three previous offers in 2015, 2017 and 2019.

The Parole Board heard that she was now considered to be a “low risk of re-offending” and that probation officers and prison officers supported the plan.

A spokesman for the Parole Board said in a statement: “Following a review application by the Secretary of State, a judge ruled that the decision made by independent members of the Parole Board to release was not irrational, as alleged in the review application, and the original decision is upheld.”

Her boyfriend Stephen Barker and his brother Jason Owen were also jailed after being convicted in connection with Peter’s death.
