Batoche now belongs to Mètis

The partnership is one of many the Mètis Nation — Saskatchewan is building with First Nations and non-Indigenous people in the area, said President Glen McCallum.

On the one hand, it’s been a long journey, but a lot has been done in the past five years since the Liberals were first elected to Parliament, he explained.

“There were really aggressive conversations about the land and the government was very cooperative and accommodating,” McCallum said. “That’s why it took us so fast. Five years is not a long time.”

The talks were comfortable and conducted with accountability and transparency, he said, which is why they were able to proceed so quickly.

McCallum said, as before, Parks Canada will maintain and care for the land in partnership with Mètis.

“We always need each other to build a solid foundation so we can look forward and collaborate on how we plan.” We will work together,” he said.

The Mètis Nation already has plans for a youth center on the site, and one day McCallum would like to see a legislative building there.
