Bayfield Farm Crash Leaves 1 Dead, 2 Injured – NBC Boston

A reversing car crashed into a farm in Byfield, Massachusetts, killing a woman and seriously injuring two others on Saturday afternoon, police said.

Newbury Police Chief John Lucy said the crash happened at about 3:35 p.m. at a well-known, family farm stand on Chute Road in Byfield, a village in Newbury.

According to Lucy, for unknown reasons, the car accelerated very quickly in reverse to the cash register on the farm stand.

One woman died in the crash.

The young man was seriously injured in the accident, and one man was seriously injured, Lucy said. Both were taken to Anna Jaques Hospital in Newburyport.

The driver is very distracted, Lucy said, and is cooperating with the investigation.

The police chief will not go into details about the victims or the driver, including whether there is a man or a woman behind the wheel of the car.

The police chief said they had no idea why the fatal crash had occurred, including whether or not a medical event could have occurred.

Lucy said the investigation would provide information on what happened, noting that everything is in progress right now.

Lucy called it a very, very tragic event and noted that it was a wonderful Saturday afternoon and there were many people on the farm stand during the crash.

Police are currently focused on finding out what happened, Lucy said, but they are also focused on the family, which is going through a very difficult time.

The Georgetown Fire Department assisted the Newbury Fire Department at the scene.

No other information immediately. The investigation is active and ongoing.
