Ben Wallace ‘could be king’ in Tory leadership race | News

Ben Wallace has the potential to be a “king” in the Conservative leadership race because of his popularity among Tory party members, his friends have said.

The 52-year-old defense minister is still undecided on who to back, with sources close to him saying he will wait until the final rounds to announce who has his backing.

He withdrew from the race on Saturday in a surprise move. MPs were preparing to launch a campaign for him after opinion polls pegged him as the favorite among Tory members.

One of his friends suggested that his support for either candidate was highly regarded given the huge support he had from ordinary Tory people, describing him as a “kingmaker”.
