REHOBOT BEACH, Del. “President Biden fell to the ground during a morning bike ride near his vacation home here on Saturday, falling as his shoes apparently got stuck in his toe cages as he tried to stop.”
“I’m fine,” he said quickly as Secret Service agents came to his aid.
He fell as he approached a waiting crowd, and after jumping out again, he spent a few minutes talking to onlookers and then answering a few questions from reporters.
Asked about raising tariffs on China in light of the stress on the US economy, he joked: “I will not talk to you during my vacation.”
He added that he planned to talk to Chinese President Xi Jinping “soon” and said he was still deciding what to do with tariffs.
He also said he was “pleased with the progress” on gun law before getting on his bike and setting off.
President and First Lady Jill Biden are in Rehoboth Beach, where they have a holiday home as they celebrate their 45th wedding anniversary.
The two cycled together on Saturday trails around Cape Hanlopen State Park, but the first lady had stepped forward before the president fell.
This isn’t the first time Biden has spilled. He fell in December 2020 while chasing his Major dog into his home, which resulted in an injury that forced him to wear medical boots for several weeks. He also stumbled as he climbed the steps of Air Force One.
Critics use every opportunity to raise doubts about the suitability of the nation’s oldest president, although in this case it was an event that many cyclists who fasten or have a cage for their fingers have experienced.
“My leg caught,” Biden said.
He did better than John F. Kerry, who in 2015 overturned over a curb in a parking lot in the French Alps while being chained and breaking his femur. The crash led to an operation and a long recovery that complicated Kerry’s nuclear talks with Iran over the United States.
Biden had no visible scratches from his fall, and a White House official later said he was “okay” and “no medical attention needed.”
“The president is looking forward to spending the rest of the day with his family,” the official said.
