President Biden said he supported Congress ending the filibuster to pass legislation protecting the national right to abortion on Thursday.

Biden made the announcement during a press conference at the NATO summit in Spain. Biden initially supported the retention of the Senate filibuster when he took office.

Reporters pressured Biden on what enforcement action he could take to secure access to abortion nationwide following the Supreme Court’s ruling to overturn Rowe v. Wade last week. Biden replied that the only solution was to codify Rowe in Congress.

“The most important thing we need to do is clarify how scandalous this decision is,” Biden said. “I believe we need to codify Rowe vs. Wade in law, and the way to do that is to make sure Congress votes in favor.”

“And if the flibuster interferes, it’s like the right to vote, we have to demand an exception from the filibuster for this action,” he continued.

Earlier, Biden called on Congress to codify Roe following the SCOTUS decision on Friday, but he did not call for an end to the fraud. Biden had only previously called for the measure during his efforts to push through voting reforms that failed.
