The White House is ready to announce that President Joe Biden will travel to Saudi Arabia, according to a report.
Biden will meet with Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman during a visit to the region next month, the Wall Street Journal reported, citing two officials with “direct knowledge of the plans.”
The announcement could be made as early as Monday, amid a global oil shortage caused by Russia’s invasion of Ukraine on February 24. Following Ukraine’s invasion, countries around the world have imposed sanctions and an oil embargo on Russia, effectively removing its oil from global supply.

The oil shortage was a pain for the Biden administration as it failed to stem rising gas prices, which had just topped $ 5 a gallon for the first time in US history.

Biden’s visit came as a surprise to many on Capitol Hill, as Biden has criticized Saudi Arabia in the past and many lawmakers have also been critical of human rights abuses in the country.
“I would not go shake his hand,” Democratic MP Adam Schiff said in an interview last weekend. “Until Saudi Arabia makes a radical change in its human rights, I would not want to have anything to do with it.
