Patriots coach Bill Belichick has a new tug-of-war adage to go along with “to Cincinnati,” “day by day” and “it’s already been decided” and others that don’t currently come to mind.
We are going through a process.
He used it three times when explaining the fact that two different assistant coaches called offensive plays during Thursday night’s preseason opener against the Giants.
We’ll focus on the Q&A on the topic given out by the team after the game.
Q: We saw both Matt Patricia and Joe Judge take turns tonight on offense. Is that the plan going forward, have them switch back and forth and do you plan to nominate one person or go with both?
BB: Yeah, well, we made that game. We did a lot of things in this game that will be beneficial in the long run, whether it’s the coaching staff, the playing time, the players that have played and so on. It’s all part of the process.
Q: Bill, what were some of the benefits of having Joe and Matt call tonight?
BB: I thought it would be a good opportunity for us to do that.
Q: Do you know if anyone will be calling when the regular season rolls around?
BB: Yeah, don’t worry about it. We will figure it out.
Question: Have you decided?
BB: We are going through a process. Just like everything else on this team. . . .
Q: You mentioned earlier with the offensive play caller that you were going through a process. What you should see –
BB: I don’t need to see anything, we’re just going through a process. Just like that.
Q: This is a bit of an unusual situation for us who have watched you before –
BB: What do you want me to do?
Question: I guess we’re just looking for some clarity on why we’re seeing what we’re seeing.
BB: Great. yes Going through a process.
The most logical conclusion is that the six-time Super Bowl-winning head coach wanted to give each of them a try on pay plays so he could analyze their performances — the same way he would watch film of a player. . That seems to be part of the process.
But with Belichick, nothing can be ruled out. Perhaps the process leads to both calling players during the regular season, or perhaps taking turns during a given game.
Nevertheless, an unexpected mystery persists in New England. In 30 days, we’ll see if Patricia or Judge, or both, or someone else cancels the offense in the regular season opener against the Dolphins.
