Boris Johnson “can’t act on rumours”, a minister has insisted amid backlash from Chris Pincher

Former No 10 adviser Dominic Cummings claims Boris Johnson referred to Chris Pincher as “Pincher by name, Pincher by nature” long before he appointed him in February.

Will Quince, the children and families minister, said he could not imagine Mr Johnson making the comment and questioned Mr Cummings’ “credibility”.

Asked if he could imagine the Prime Minister making the remark, Mr Queens told LBC Radio: “No, I can’t. I think this quote comes from Dominic Cummings, who is not someone I give a lot of credence to in terms of past experience and again, nor do I want to be drawn into anything like rumor or gossip about who said what and who might have said what in the past.

“All I know is this: I have been assured categorically that the Prime Minister was not aware of any specific allegations or complaints and I will go further… I do not believe that anyone in this position, let alone the Prime Minister, if they are aware of what we are now aware of in the papers for the last three days, they would have appointed Chris Pincher to the post of Deputy Chief Whip if they had known about it.
