Senior Tories could change party rules and force Boris Johnson to face another confidence vote among Tory MPs as early as tonight, The times has learned.

The prime minister’s authority over his party is crumbling after three more ministers plus two parliamentary aides resigned this morning and a string of previously loyal MPs turned against his leadership.

Rebel MPs believe a routine meeting of the 1922 Conservative backbench executive this afternoon could be the tipping point to change the rules, which currently mean Johnson cannot be ousted for another 11 months.
