Boris Johnson will allow low-income people to use housing benefits to buy housing

Boris Johnson is expected to unveil plans to allow people to use their housing benefits to help them climb the property ladder as part of a set of messages aimed at alleviating the housing crisis.

The prime minister is ready to argue that this money would be better spent on helping people buy their own homes than on paying their rent – in a policy called by one minister “benefits to bricks”.

Reaffirming the plan on Thursday, leveling secretary Michael Gove told Sky News: “One of the things we’re looking at is how people can save explicitly on home ownership … We’re looking for a special savings vehicle for yes people can [on benefits] can save on this deposit. “

However, the cabinet minister suggested that beneficiaries in London and the south-east may still be struggling to climb the property ladder.

“There will be many people in the north, the Midlands and the southwest who will be able to climb the ladder of property using the amount they earn and receive in universal credit,” Mr Gove told LBC.

In a speech in Lancashire, the prime minister is also expected to confirm plans to expand the right to buy tenants of housing associations, review the mortgage market to look for ways to reduce people’s deposits and may declare plans to build housing with flat packages .
