Today, Boris Johnson will unveil plans to allow people who pay rent through housing benefits to receive additional support to secure mortgages from banks.
Lisa Nandi, secretary for raising the shadow, doubts whether the policy will work, as “there are no signs” that creditors have joined the idea.
Speaking to Sky News, she said: “In general, it’s a great idea to try to provide more people with the security of their own home, especially people who find themselves in the benefits system.
“The problem is that, as always, the government has not considered the details. There is no indication that any of the creditors are on board with this.
“The government may say it wants to open mortgages for people who receive housing benefits, but unless creditors agree to do so, this will not happen.
