Boris Johnson’s last speech: The Prime Minister announces a housing plan to increase ownership

Boris Johnson says the no-confidence vote is “decisive” despite the mass Tory revolt

Boris Johnson is speaking on new housing plans that will allow people to use their advantages to climb the property ladder.

The prime minister is expected to unveil politics in a speech in Blackpool on Thursday afternoon, in a bid to save his political career after 41 per cent of lawmakers expressed distrust in his leadership.

However, the government’s right to buy the plan has been declared a “dangerous trick” by the charity Shelter, with the group’s chief executive urging the prime minister to “stop wasting time” on failed policies.

Shelter CEO Polly Neath said the government’s promise to replace sold social housing through Right to Buy “failed”.

“The government must stop wasting time on the failed policies of the past and start building more than the safe social homes that this country actually needs.

What is the right to buy and what can be changed according to government plans?

Boris Johnson will announce his plans today to help lower-income people buy houses as he seeks to reset his hesitant prime minister after Monday’s damaging vote of confidence.

In a speech in Lancashire, the prime minister is expected to present a plan that generally has two main boards.

The first is a commitment to extend the Purchase Right scheme to people renting from housing associations. The second is to allow people to use their housing benefits to pay mortgages.

The housing plan “reheats the old idea,” says Keir Starmer

Labor leader Keir Starmer said Boris Johnson’s plan to expand the right to buy tenants’ housing associations was a “wrong approach”.

He added: “This is a heated version of an idea that the government had in 2015. They piloted it and it didn’t work. It warms up an old idea – they really are at the end of the road. ”

“Writing is on the wall”: Boris Johnson will be removed before the next election, says former Tory chancellor

Boris Johnson is doomed to be ousted from his own party ahead of the next general election following a devastating no-confidence vote this week, said former Chancellor Philip Hammond.

The former cabinet minister said the “letters are on the wall” for the prime minister after 41% of his own lawmakers voted to remove him – predicting that his authority would “fall away” in the next few months.

“I do not think he will lead the party in the next general election. “I think a riot of this magnitude is very difficult to survive,” Hammond told Bloomberg.

Labor compared Boris Johnson to a broken computer that can only be turned off and on “so many times” before realizing that “you just have to get rid of it.”

Opening Business Questions, Shadow Commons leader Thangam Debbonaire said: “I have to say what happened to the Queen’s speech? Did they lose him behind the couch? Where are all these bills that were promised to us?

“Whether it’s waiting for cancer, waiting long for passports and driver’s licenses, or queuing at airports, we are lagging behind in the UK and the leader’s statement does nothing to address it.

“Meanwhile, the prime minister seems to be making another attempt to reset his prime, but, Mr President, there are only so many times when you can try to turn something off and then turn it back on, just to find that it’s still broken and you just have to get rid of it. But Tory MPs have made their choice. “

Queen receives a platinum anniversary gift from cabinet ministers

The Queen received a music box from cabinet ministers to mark her platinum anniversary.

Hand-painted music box with enamel on copper, finished with a platinum stand, plays Handel’s “Hallelujah”.

The box uniquely depicts № 10 Downing Street above and a miniature portrait of all fourteen of the Queen’s 1952 premieres around the countries. These portraits are surrounded by the same shade of yellow that is on the walls of the staircase of No. 10, which are known photos of all British prime ministers.

On the inner lid there is an inscription with the names of the cabinet.

The government acknowledges that zero economic benefits from Brexit crowns on cups of liters

The government expects zero economic benefit from reintroducing crown symbols on liter cups, ministers acknowledged.

With rising food and energy prices, the government is using the anniversary to re-announce that crown brands can be returned to glass pubs.

But when asked about the benefits, Business Minister Paul Scully said the government did not “anticipate any impact on GDP” from the commemorative measure.

Until 2006, a crown symbol was displayed on beer mugs to indicate that it contained exactly one pint. However, the new EU rules from that date meant that the crown symbol was no longer required, but that a European CE marking was needed instead.

Speaking in the Municipalities during a debate on the government’s plans to repeal the Protocol on Northern Ireland, Tory MP and Brexit member Sir Bernard Jenkin issued a warning.

He said: “If the government does not present a bill that offers a serious prospect of restoring power sharing in Northern Ireland and restoring the Good Friday Agreement, I will vote against it.

The Minister of Foreign Affairs replied: “My colleagues from the financial benches will have heard your opinion.”

The government’s housing plan is a “dangerous trick,” the Shelter chief said

Shelter has also weighed heavily on the government’s new housing ownership policy.

Polly Neath, Shelter’s chief executive, said: “The prime minister’s housing plans are confusing, unworkable and dangerous. Devising reckless plans to expand the right to buy will put our rapidly shrinking supply of social homes at even greater risk.

“For decades, the promise to replace every social home sold through Right to Buy has failed. If these plans progress, we will remain locked in the same destructive cycle of selling off and demolishing thousands more social homes than are built each year.

“The math doesn’t match: why are you trying to sell the few really affordable homes that are left – at a great price – when homelessness is on the rise and over a million households are on the waiting list. The government must stop wasting time on the failed policies of the past and start building more than the secure social homes that this country actually needs. ”

Gove promises an “immediate” replacement of social housing

Raising Secretary Michael Gove said new social housing would be built “immediately” to replace housing purchased by low-income people under the government’s latest housing plans.

Asked by ITV’s Good Morning Britain how quickly the new social homes will replace those purchased under the scheme, Mr Gove said: “Immediately”.

He added: “In general, we want to be in a situation where we increase social homes, increase the number of homes that are there for property, and ensure that the availability of social homes when people move from renting to property, so that we are replacing these numbers as well. “
