Boris Johnson’s latest news: Prime Minister and Macron fail to discuss migrant migration to G7

Boris Johnson rules out “psychological transformation” to change his character

At the G7 summit, Boris Johnson and Emmanuel Macron failed to discuss the issue of thousands of migrants risking their lives to cross the English Channel.

The British and French leaders met at a summit in the German Bavarian Alps to discuss geopolitical crises such as the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

But they did not pay attention to the situation in which more than 12,000 people crossed the English Channel this year.

Asked why the passage of ships was not discussed, Mr Johnson’s spokesman said: “There are many important issues of geopolitical interest to discuss, not least the crisis in Ukraine.

“They have talked about these issues before and I am sure they will do it again. But, obviously, on the eve of the G7, that’s almost a lot, I’m sure, in the forefront of both.

Johnson is expected to use the G7 to call on France and Germany to provide more military support to Ukraine.

Back in the UK, he remains under pressure after a series of scandals and two damaging by-elections.

Decisions on steel tariffs will be made soon, Downing Street said

The government said its decisions on steel tariffs would be made soon and would “balance our international obligations and the national interest”.

A spokesman for the prime minister said: “We are consulting with foreign colleagues on our proposals before making a final decision before the deadline.

The spokesman added: “There is more steel production capacity worldwide than there is demand and this makes steel prices artificially low, harmful and potentially placing steel producers in countries like ours that cannot compete with more low prices, outside the business.

“So while the UK was a member of the EU, the EU imposed tariffs on some steel products imported into the EU, we maintained these safeguards when it left the EU, and we also set up a TRA (Trade Remedies Authority) when we to the left.

“After the review last year, we expanded the measures and the reasons were set out there now. We are now considering our position and will come up with our decision in due course. “

Brexit has allowed the United Kingdom to lead the crisis in Ukraine, the prime minister said

Boris Johnson said the United Kingdom could not be in charge of providing support to Ukraine if it were still in the EU.

Asked if the UK is better after Brexit, the prime minister told CNN: “That’s right (better)” before mentioning the response to the Covid vaccine and the ability to trade.

He added: “We are able to change some of our regulations to regain control of our borders. We no longer spend heaps of money on projects we can’t control. And that was a good decision. “

Mr Johnson continued: “I do not think that the United Kingdom, within the European Union and within the kind of matrix of common foreign and security policy that we had at the time, I do not think we would be ahead. as the first European country to arm Ukrainians to give them the means they need to defend themselves.

Unite says Labor’s refusal to support BA’s potential strike is “new low”

Unite has criticized Labor’s refusal to support a potential British Airways (BA) strike as a “new low”.

Earlier today, shadow foreign minister David Lamy said he “strongly” did not support a potential strike by BA employees voted by Unite and GMB.

Speaking to the BBC and Sky News, the Tottenham Labor MP said the party continues to support negotiations and a deal when it comes to pay disputes, jobs and working conditions.

Mr Lamy said: “We are all feeling a pinch of inflation. Many of us may want a 10% increase (pay); in fact, most people realize that you are unlikely to get this.

“It would be absolutely wrong, it would not be a responsible opposition if I offered ‘yes’ to any strike.”

(PA)

Sharon Graham, secretary general of Unite, said: “Support for bad bosses is a new low level for Labor.

“David Lamy has chosen to launch a direct attack on British Airways workers. This is a group of workers who were brutally attacked by their employer during Covid. “Layoffs and re-hiring” have led to thousands of unnecessary job cuts and pay cuts.

“This dispute is not about increasing wages, but about recovering the money taken out of the pockets of workers by an opportunistic employer.

“British Airways and the parent company IAG have billions in reserves and assets and forecast a return on profit this quarter.

“Supporting bad bosses is a new minimum for Labor and once again shows that politicians have failed. Trade unions must now protect working people. We are their only voice. ”

The Prime Minister suggests that the United Kingdom may risk violating WTO rules on steel duties

Boris Johnson has suggested that Britain may be prepared to violate international law to protect its steel industry.

The prime minister said at the G7 summit in Germany that it was wise for British steel to enjoy “the same protections” as other European economies.

The Telegraph said it intends to impose new steel tariffs to gain support in traditional Labor centers.

The move could violate World Trade Organization (WTO) rules, but Mr Johnson said taking risks was one of the “difficult choices you have to make”.

The Telegraph also reported that ministers plan to announce a two-year extension of steel tariffs already imposed on developed countries and China.

PM warns Macron not to give Putin “permission to manipulate”

Boris Johnson warned his French counterpart Emmanuel Macron that any attempt to resolve the conflict in Ukraine would give Vladimir Putin a “license to manipulate” other countries.

At the beginning of the Russian invasion of Ukraine, Macron was criticized for negotiating with Putin and said Russia should not be “humiliated.”

Johnson told Macron that the compromise would cause “only lasting instability” as the two met to discuss the war at the G7 summit in Germany.

The Prime Minister will be “honored” to welcome Zelensky to the United Kingdom on a state visit
