Box Office: Fantastic Beast Tracking 3 for Soft Opening Weekend

While the in-house box office is showing signs of life after an era of COVID blockades, it seems that not every film franchise is backed by the return of viewers. Fantastic Beasts: Dumbledore’s Secrets, Warner Bros. The latest record in his series of prehistory of the Harry Potter franchise begins a little unstable, and is expected to receive a record low debut for a film about the wizarding world.

The third, Fantastic Beasts, grossed $ 20.1 million in previews on Friday and Thursday nights from 4,753 seats in North America, the lowest first-day figure for a film adjacent to Potter. Industry analysts predict a three-day opening in the neighborhood worth $ 40 million, with some potential for an increase.

This is not exactly the most disastrous result for cinemas in 2022, but it is a disappointing start for a film franchise that should behave like a big box office. Dumbledore’s Secrets has a solid production budget of $ 200 million, boosted by COVID delays and security costs. Warner Bros. will have to appeal to an international audience to give a thriving sequel to the magical sequel. Dumbledore’s Secrets should reach an international sum of more than $ 175 million by Sunday.

Dumbledore’s Secrets continues the downward trend for the Fantastic Beasts series. The first publication in 2016 attracted $ 74 million in the domestic market, while its 2018 sequel, The Grindelwald Crimes, fell to a $ 62 million debut. While one can forgive Dumbledore’s Secrets as a victim of a theatrical landscape that was not in place before the pandemic, things are not so simple. Many of the sequels released in the last few months have had bigger debuts than their predecessors, such as “Venom: Let There Be Carnage”, “Spider-Man: No Way Home” and last week’s “Sonic the Hedgehog 2”. It seems that “Fantastic Beasts” does not arouse such a level of enthusiasm among movie buffs.

Once a promising opportunity to spin extra gold at the Potter box office, Fantastic Beasts became a headache for Warner Bros. The author of “Potter” and writer of the franchise J. Rowling has met with widespread criticism from the LGBTQIA + community for her statements about gender and gender identity. And after the 2018 sequel, Warner Bros. reworked the role of the villain Grindelwald with Mads Mickelsen, removing the original actor Johnny Depp as the actor got into a controversy over allegations of domestic violence. As the number of box offices continues to decline, the studio may need to rethink how it is approaching the world of wizards that is moving forward.

Ordinary franchise director David Yates, “Fantastic Beasts: Dumbledore’s Secrets,” sees Jude Law return as Hogwarts favorite leader Albus Dumbledore and Eddie Redmain as magician Newt Scamander. Ezra Miller, Dan Fogler, Alison Sudol, Callum Turner and Jessica Williams also star.

In a review of the film, Variety chief film critic Peter Debrugge called Dumbledore’s Secrets “significantly improved” starring Mickelsen, writing that “fans are likely to love the revelations, including a deeper commitment to tragic lovemaking.” story between favorites Hogwarts director Albus Dumbledore and the wizard have decided to settle accounts with the Muggle species. Other critics were not so kind; the film has a 49% overall Rotten Tomatoes approval rating. Ticket buyers seem to be more receptive, giving Fantastic Beasts 3 a “B +” rating on CinemaScore.

Opening this weekend, Columbia Pictures’ “Father Stu” is expected to win a total of more than $ 7 million out of 2,705 seats in five days. The religious film, which debuted on Wednesday, has a modest production budget of $ 4 million. Critics were largely indifferent, with Mark Wahlberg’s car receiving a 41% overall Rotten Tomatoes approval rating. However, moviegoers were extremely supportive, rating “Father Stu” with a glowing “A” rating on CinemaScore.

Wahlberg produced and starred in “Father Stu,” playing a boxer who turned to church to become a priest after suffering from a muscle disease. The R-rated drama also stars Jackie Weaver and Mel Gibson in supporting roles.

Paramount’s Sonic the Hedgehog 2 slowed to second place after its booming $ 71 million debut. The SEGA sequel is expected to earn $ 26.5 million from its sophomore, down 63% from the start. The family-friendly film is set to expand its gross domestic product to $ 116 million by Sunday, putting it on track to finish above its predecessor’s total of $ 145 million by 2020 (although this series has been abruptly discontinued since the start of blocking COVID-19).

Speaking of Harry Potter, Daniel Radcliffe found his own success at a box office outside the franchise that created it. Paramount’s Lost City, in which Radcliffe plays the villain, is set to take third place at the box office with an estimated $ 5.45 million for the fourth weekend. Sandra Bullock-Channing Tatum with two hands will raise her local amount over $ 77 million by Sunday.

Finishing the top five at the in-house box office, the All-In-One mix seems to be in fourth place with a projected $ 4.73 million starting weekend. After expanding from a limited edition last Friday, the A24 added even more seats this weekend – 950, to be exact – and the film looks set to fall by just 22% as a result. Thanks to stellar reviews and strong word of mouth, the indie edition should reach a domestic gross of $ 16 million on Sunday.

Finally, Columbia Pictures’ Morbius continues to lose its legs in the national box office. The studio’s latest self-branded Sony Pictures Universe of Marvel Characters record (which also includes Tom Hardy’s two films “Venom” and the upcoming “Kraven the Hunter”) appears to fall to sixth place in the local charts with a 58% drop over his sophomore outing. . Jared Leto’s car is expected to raise a total gross of $ 64 million by Sunday, a figure supported by the $ 39 million discovery.
