Devin Haney was ready to step up and fly to Australia to fight George Cambosos Jr. for the undisputed lightweight title on Saturday night. This proved to be a very lucrative decision for Haney, as he dominated Cambosos in 12 rounds to win all four world championships weighing 135 pounds.
Haney became only the ninth fighter to combine all four recognized titles in each category and the second youngest at just 23 years old.
There was very little drama in the match, with Haney immediately making a brilliant shot that prevented Cambosos from continuing to attack. When the blow hit, Haney fired with leading left hooks and made right hands behind him, each shot discouraging Cambosos from running with his right hand, which he seemed to have loaded all night.
In the end, Haney won with a unanimous decision with official results of 116-112, 116-112 and 118-110.
“I handicapped him in his best game,” Haney said after the match. “He wanted to land overland on the right and the big left hook. I handicapped him. I fought in both directions. When I went to the left, I would fight with his right hand. When I went to the right, I would fight with him. None of them could land. “
Haney entered the WBC Championship while Kambosos was the WBC Franchise Champion, along with WBA, IBF and WBO world titles. Now Haney is leaving with all the gold and a bright future ahead.
