Bragg fails to cope with the lack of competition in seafood processing: FFAW

Fisheries Minister Derrick Bragg has approved a crab processing license for St. Mary’s, as well as an increase in the quota for the fish market of Dandy Dan, but FFAW believes that these decisions have failed to cope with the lack of competition in seafood processing.

Although the minister approved two candidacies, two others did not receive the green light.

This is the problem with FFAW. They say that by disapproving of the other statements, the minister has rejected many of the board’s recommendations, something they say is “unprecedented and unjustified” as the board’s goal is to make impartial recommendations to protect and benefit the provincial economy.

The union says the approvals, while welcome news, will make very little difference in other parts of the province.

FFAW is asking for a timely meeting with the Minister to find a way to solve the problems before the end of the season.

Meanwhile, the Association of Seaward Enterprises of Newfoundland and Labrador welcomed the two approvals announced by Minister Bragg.

They argue that more competition will reduce pressure on the coastal fleet to fish in potentially dangerous conditions. However, commenting on whether the two approvals will do enough to reduce this pressure, CEO Ryan Cleary said he would “see you soon”.
