Police say a 20-year-old man is in hospital with serious injuries and another man is in custody after an alleged shooting in the Goulds area on Sunday night in St. John’s.
Brandon Chaff, 21, appeared in St. John’s County Court on Monday morning, just weeks after he was released on bail.
Chaif faces 10 charges related to Sunday night’s incident, including a serious assault, several gun crimes and a breach of a release order.
“Yes,” Chaff said when Judge Lois Scanes asked if he understood the charges against him.
Chaf, who has no criminal record, was arrested on May 29 for trafficking in firearms. The crime is linked to a series of violent crimes in the St. John area in early May.
Chaf is expected to appear in court on July 4 via video call.
Chaf was ordered to have no contact with the victim.
RNC is looking for witnesses, video
The Royal Newfoundland Police say they were called to battle near the Robert E. Howlett Memorial Drive shortly before 8 p.m.
Police said a man was taken to hospital with serious injuries when they arrived at the scene.
Shortly before 9 p.m., the Royal Newfoundland Police tweeted that officers had responded to a gun crime near Doyle’s Road and Robert E. Howlett Memorial Drive and were tracking potential suspects in the Goulds area, including the back line.

At 9:17 p.m., RNC sent another tweet asking residents of the Goulds area to stay in their homes while officers searched patrols, the K-9 department and the criminal investigation department.
At 11:11 p.m., the RNC reported on Twitter that a man had been detained in connection with the investigation. The force also said the search for additional potential suspects has expanded south of the main road in Goulds, which runs across the community.
