Britain is facing a national emergency over the economy, NHS lagging and illegal migration, Rishi Sunak has said as he vows to put the government on “crisis footing” from day one if he becomes prime minister.

In an interview with The timesthe former chancellor said the government was not “working as it should” and warned that a “business as usual mentality” was no longer enough.

He said families were facing “enormous” costs from rising inflation, the NHS was under unbearable pressure and the public believed the government had lost control of Britain’s borders.

Sunak will announce policies to tackle five national crises in the coming weeks in a challenge to Liz Truss, the foreign secretary, who is leading the Tories in the polls
