British Columbians are the least likely to want to secede from Canada, according to a new survey.

Published on Canada Day, the new study by Research Co. surveyed Canadians’ attitudes toward the idea of sovereignty and found that British Columbians were most attached to their identity as Canadians.
More than two-thirds, or 67 percent, disagree with the idea of British Columbia seceding from Canada. But 19 percent of residents said the province would be better off going its own way as its own country. Another 15 percent said they weren’t sure.
The poll found that support for separation was highest in Alberta (33 percent) and Quebec (32 percent).
“Vented support for secession has declined in Alberta over the past six months, but remains the highest in Canada,” pollster Mario Canseco said in a news release. “In Quebec, with the upcoming provincial election, support for sovereignty has risen slightly.”

Support for sovereignty was lower in Saskatchewan and Manitoba (28 percent), Ontario (25 percent) and Atlantic Canada (21 percent).
The survey also asked online respondents about their thoughts on their province joining the United States.
A significant minority of Canadians – or 17 per cent – said their province would be better off becoming a US state.
However, these unpatriotic feelings were lower in BC than anywhere else except Alberta.
Only 14 percent of Albertans expressed a preference to join the USBC, up from just over 15 percent.
Across Canada, respondents expressed dissatisfaction with the performance of their provincial and federal leaders and what it means for their province.

About 51 percent said their province would be better off with a different prime minister. The same percentage suggested they would prefer to see another prime minister run the show in Ottawa.
BC seems most content with the premier remaining: 41 percent said BC would be better off with someone other than John Horgan, while 36 percent disagreed.
Research Co. conducted the online survey June 18-20 among 1,000 Canadian adults. Data are statistically weighted according to Canadian Census data for age, sex and region. The margin of error, which measures sampling variability, is +/- 3.1 percentage points, 19 times out of 20.
