A retired British lawyer is believed to have died in the Seychelles after disappearing during a trek in the jungle.
Peter Clement, 57, who was reportedly on holiday to celebrate his retirement, was last seen walking alone on the 12-kilometer Grande Barbe trail on Silhouette Island on May 15.
No traces of the former camera chief at 2 Harcourt Buildings in London have been found after a search by helicopter, boat and drone. One theory is that he may have encountered difficulties when bad weather occurred while walking along the path that runs from one side of the mountain island to the other.
In a statement on its website 2, Harcourt Buildings said: “With deep shock and sadness, we must announce the loss of our dear friend, colleague and former cameraman Peter Clement. He had recently retired after a brilliant career at the crime bar, practicing from 2 Harcourt Buildings for more than 30 years
“Before joining the House, he was a captain in the Army Legal Service and served in Northern Ireland. He was much loved and respected by everyone in the cells, as well as among his many friends at the crime bar. He will miss him deeply. “
The local newspaper Le Seychellois reported earlier in the search that the weather was so bad that it was unlikely that Clement would be found alive.
According to the police, all his personal belongings and travel documents were found intact in his hotel room, the weekly writes.
He added that in an unusual move, police said the continuing bad weather had reduced hopes of finding the Briton alive.
A foreign ministry spokesman confirmed that the department supports the family of a British man who went missing in the Seychelles and keeps in touch with local authorities.
Matthew Scott, a lawyer at Pump Court Chambers, was among many in the profession who paid tribute to Clement, describing him as “a good lawyer and a man who was impossible not to like.”
Robert Verkeik, a journalist and author who studied with Clement, said: “An exceptional, funny man without a lack of opinions, a student over his age. His barrier career was due to his hard work and intelligence. “
