Broken Heart: York School Board Confirms Death of Student’s Trustee in Weekend Clash

A school trustee from the York City School Board died after a collision with a motor vehicle over the weekend.

The board confirmed the death of a 12th-grader from Stoffville High School, Munira Chakera, in a statement issued Monday morning, noting that employees were “heartbroken” by the news.

The circumstances surrounding the collision that took Chaker’s life are not immediately clear.

“Munira’s leadership and positive presence have been felt by many at her school in the Stouffville District and throughout the region, and grief and loss will affect many,” the statement said. “As a school board, it is important to focus on supporting students affected by the tragedy. In the coming days, the Board’s traumatic events support team will be stationed at Munira’s school and other places that may be directly affected.

Chakera was one of three trustees of students who served on the York City School Board for the 2021-2022 school year.

In a statement posted on Twitter, Education Minister Stephen Lecce called Chakera “a brilliant, positive and strong student leader who will be sorely missed.”

“My deepest condolences to the YRDSB family and community,” he said.

The YRDSB said the flags at Stoveville High School and all administrative offices on board would be lowered by half by the day of Chaker’s funeral.

We hear with a broken heart about the tragic death of YRDSB student trustee Munira Chakera. Our thoughts are with her family and loved ones. We work closely with our schools to ensure the support of our students and staff.
