Photos shared on social media show smoke billowing from the roof of one of the school’s buildings.

It is understandable that the building was already intended for demolition and was previously home to the school’s history and geography departments.

Firefighters from Gosport, Fareham, Havant, Portchester, Southsea, Wickham, Hightown, Eastleigh fought for nearly three hours to control the blaze.

In all, emergency crews used 17 sets of breathing apparatus and two main jets to finally extinguish the flames, which were believed to have ignited on a flat roof on the first floor.

12-year-old Ella-May Mackintosh-Sales took this photo of the fire in Brun Park.

A spokeswoman for the Hampshire and White Island Fire and Rescue Service said approximately 10 per cent of the building had been destroyed.

The officers managed to put out the fire by 9.25 pm.

The dramatic battle to extinguish the flames was watched by dozens of people outside the school.

Among them was 7th grader Ella-Mai Macintosh-Sales from Rowner.

Speaking to The News with her mother’s permission, the 12-year-old said: “I just couldn’t believe it, it was really crazy to see my own school burning. The whole building was surrounded by firefighters.

“There were seven fire engines and four police cars. We saw that the building was on fire and flames could come out of the roof, walls and windows.

“I could see firefighters getting in and out of a broken window to make sure no one was in the building.”

Hampshire police have been informed. The cause of the fire is still unknown.

Firefighters conducted an additional inspection of the building at 7 am, a spokesman for the fire and rescue service said no further action would be taken.

The Brune Park Community School is home to more than 1,330 students between the ages of 11 and 16.

The school has not yet published a statement about the fire and what impact it will have – if any – on students.
