Calgary ranks below other Canadian cities on the work-life balance list

Calgary has sunk into juggling work and private life, according to new data released on Friday.

The information gathered by the security company Kisi is made up of 100 cities around the world, most of which are in the United States

Four Canadian centers were on the list – Toronto, Vancouver, Ottawa and Calgary. All four Canadian cities were also included in Kisi’s lists in 2021 and 2019.

While the nation’s capital is the seventh highest, Calgary is the lowest among them in this year’s table – 30th.

A year ago, when many restrictions on COVID-19 and rules for working from home were still in force, Kisi analyzed the same data and Calgary came out much higher on the list – in 13th place.

The company says the list is different from a living index or a list of the best cities to work for.

“The study seeks to show which cities provide the healthiest work-life balance for their citizens.”

Kisi looked at various items on its list, such as telecommuting, work intensity, as well as unemployment data and the number of people working in multiple jobs.

He also looked at how cities care for citizens.

“We studied the role of society and institutions in caring for the city’s residents during this difficult period. To do this, we examined the impact of the pandemic and the support offered in each city, as well as the quality of health care, access to mental health and the level of gender equality and LGBT +. “

According to a recent Leger survey, which asked more than 3,000 Canadians across the country for their views on the changing workplace, there is a clear link “between quality of life and health at work”.

“In the current workforce, we are seeing a major trend, as those who are dissatisfied with their quality of life are usually more likely to look for a new job opportunity in the next two years,” the sociologist wrote.

Fifty-one percent of respondents aged 35 to 54 say they are dissatisfied with their quality of life.

Kissy says the purpose of his study is to help decision-makers – both companies and governments – understand the problems and guide them to take positive action.

“As the pandemic subsides, its economic impact, combined with the war in Ukraine, is being felt around the world in the form of high inflation, which is already affecting daily life.
