U.S. Capitol Police arrested Congresswoman Judy Chu, D-Calif., on Thursday during a pro-choice protest for crowding, obstruction or nuisance.

Protesters blocked the intersection of First Street and Constitution Avenue next to the Capitol and Supreme Court buildings Wednesday afternoon. Capitol Police arrested 181 people after issuing multiple warnings to demonstrators, the department said in a tweet Wednesday.

“The decision to march today was easy – I came out to march for the young woman who survived rape, the woman who cannot afford to travel to another country to access intensive care, the mother with an ectopic pregnancy whose life is in danger . I came out to march for all of us,” Chu said in a tweet Wednesday after his arrest.

KENTUCKY ABORTION LAW TRIGGERED BY SUPREME COURT RULING BLOCKED BY JUDGE

The demonstrations on Capitol Hill came after the Supreme Court’s ruling last week Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Org to uphold a Mississippi law banning abortions after 15 weeks of pregnancy.

The California representative shared another statement saying that when she first heard Roe v. Wade after it was overturned, she “immediately thought about who would be most hurt by this decision: a young girl who is a rape survivor, a woman who cannot afford to travel to another country to access critical care , an expectant mother with an ectopic pregnancy whose life is in danger because she cannot have an abortion.”

There are 13 states in the country that are ready to implement immediately abortion bans after the ruling, and 13 more may quickly follow suit. Some of the bans include certain medical exemptions, such as ectopic pregnancy, as well as exemptions for cases of rape and incest, but each law differs by state, according to a recent Supreme Court decision.

“So when I think of all these women – and more – the decision to join a peaceful demonstration to make it clear that we will not allow the clock to be turned back on abortion rights was an easy one. We are in this together and we will not be silenced,” she said, adding that she was “stepping up” her efforts to “eliminate the Senate filibuster” and pass her bill, the Women’s Health Protection Act.
