Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 was confirmed today for release in late October, but before that, those who pre-order the game will receive the game early with an open beta. Access is provided by prepayment for either the Cross-Gen Bundle or the Vault Edition, and perhaps most interestingly, the pre-release test will be available first on the PS5 and PS4.
This is the first real proof that Microsoft’s acquisition of Activision does not affect the maintenance of Sony’s systems, at least in the short term, as it strengthens the marketing deal that Sony is holding with the franchise. Past titles such as Call of Duty: Vanguard and Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War have also given open beta versions to PS5 and PS4 users before anyone else. Xbox boss Phil Spencer has also expressed a desire to “keep Call of Duty on PlayStation” in the past, but since the deal has not yet been concluded, this agreement is not something that the head of Microsoft can block in the first place.
As for what else you’ll get for pre-ordering one of these two digital editions, the Cross-Gen Bundle goes without saying: both PS4 and PS5 versions in one, as there will be no free upgrades from PS4 to PS5. As for the Vault edition, you get a Battle Pass and 50 Tier Skips, a Red Team 141 Operator Pack consisting of Ghost, Soap, Price and Farah, and an FJX Cinder Weapon Vault. On top of that, there are 10-hour dual XP tokens and dual weapon experience tokens, as well as the Ghost Legacy Pack, which includes 12 operator skins and 10 weapon drawings.
