Manchester City have reached an agreement with Leeds United for the signing of Calvin Phillips, according to The Athletic.
The English national Phillips is approaching a transfer to Etihad after positive discussions between City and Leeds about the fee.
City is ready to pay £ 42 million with potential bonuses of £ 3 million.
Phillips was the main target in the club’s midfield in this window and the Premier League champions increased their interest in him after the signing of the striker Erling Haaland from Borussia Dortmund last week.
Leeds is increasingly coming to terms with the loss of Phillips in the early stages of this window, as City’s intentions become clearer.
The 26-year-old is currently on holiday and must return for pre-season training with Leeds on July 4, in nine days, but progress in negotiations could lead to the finalization of transfer terms next week.
Phillips, who went through the Leeds Academy and rose to new heights under former club head coach Marcelo Bielsa, has two years left on his contract at Eland Road.
He has wanted to join City since their interest emerged, a change that will give him Champions League football next season and likely strengthen his place in the England squad for the World Cup in Qatar.
Leeds have already recruited a midfielder this summer, Mark Roca of Bayern Munich, but they will move on to hiring another proven player in that position if Philips’ move to City crosses the line.
Tyler Adams from RB Leipzig is among the options they are looking at. Adams played under Leeds head coach Jesse Marsh at his first club, the New York Red Bulls.
Meanwhile, it is understood that the 18-year-old Manchester City midfielder Darko Gyabi can go to Eland Road in a deal for 5 million pounds. This transfer is being discussed separately from the deal with Philips.
