Face masks have played a key role in preventing the spread of coronavirus. In many countries, wearing them was mandatory and is still common practice around the world.
Now there is another virus that makes headlines: monkeypox.
Monkeypox is a rare viral infection, usually registered only in parts of West and Central Africa. In recent weeks, however, more than 1,000 cases have been reported in 29 countries, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
For most people, the virus is not dangerous – most recover completely. However, as the world emerges from the worst of the coronavirus pandemic, discussions are circulating about how best to prevent its spread.

Monkeypox and coronavirus are very different, and most media coverage of monkeypox focuses on those caught only through direct contact – although it requires more research, there are indications that it is spread through sex and other close contact.
However, the CDC has recently updated its virus guidelines, including recommendations for those infected to wear masks. This raises a question that is not yet widely addressed: can monkeypox be transmitted by air? And if so, can wearing masks prevent it from spreading?
How is it airy?
Airborne transmission occurs when the virus passes into the air in the form of small respiratory droplets caused by coughing or sneezing.
Most cases of monkeypox can be traced to a patient who has direct, close contact with an infected person or animal. In some circumstances, however, this is not the case – which means that the transmission must have been by air.
In a 2017 study during an epidemic in Nigeria, researchers found that two healthcare workers became infected with the virus while in contact with the patients they were treating. In these cases, the masks may have prevented the transmission.
After the latest outbreak, scientists stressed that not enough is known about the virus to determine exactly how it is transmitted. Although it appears to be airborne, scientists believe it cannot yet be maintained over long distances.

Do I have to wear a mask?
The CDC recently updated its guidelines for masks and monkeypox. He issued an update advising passengers to wear a mask to protect themselves in countries where monkeypox has been found. However, the New York Times reported that it then removed the manual, saying it was “confusing.”
However, the CDC still advises those infected with monkeypox to wear a surgical mask, “especially those with respiratory symptoms” such as cough, sore throat or shortness of breath.
The CDC also advises that if this is “impossible”, other members of the household should wear a mask to protect themselves. At this stage, he also advises healthcare professionals to protect themselves with a mask.
The New York Ministry of Health and Mental Hygiene also issued a statement last month stating that “masks can protect against monkeypox and other viruses circulating” in the city, and advised people to wear them in most public places. places.
However, so far there are no recommendations for the general public to wear a mask specifically to prevent the spread of monkeypox. Most mask guidelines remain in effect due to COVID-19, which is much easier to spread through the air.
