Police cordon on the Kurfuerstendamm in Berlin after a car accident
Authorities in Berlin have confirmed that a teacher was killed after a car crashed into pedestrians in a central shopping area in the German capital.
Police spokesman Martin Dams said the suspect driver, a 29-year-old man with dual German-Armenian citizenship, was detained by pedestrians before being arrested by police in an incident in which at least a dozen people were injured.
Posters “expressing views on Turkey”, which has troubled relations with Armenia, were found in a car driving in the crowd, said Iris Spranger, a senior security official in Berlin. However, a spokesman for the interior ministry said it was “too early to speculate on the background (of the incident)”.
German news agency Bild quoted an investigator as saying: “This is by no means an accident – a rabid, ice-cold killer” in addition to reports that the driver of the Renault Clio is known to police.
American actor John Barrowman was caught in the incident, which he described as “horrifying”.
