Cassidy Hutchinson, an aide to then-White House chief of staff Mark Meadows, is now likely to testify in person during one of the commission’s upcoming hearings after she replaced her lawyer, who had significant ties to the former president. the question
Earlier, the commission said it considered Hutchinson a key witness in its ongoing investigation and that she had testified behind closed doors several times.
Hutchinson told the commission on Jan. 6 that Trump had proposed to Meadows that he had approved the chanted “Hang Mike Pence” by rebels who stormed the U.S. Capitol, CNN reported.
She also testified that Trump complained that his then vice president was taken to safety while Trump supporters violated the Capitol, CNN sources said.
Hutchinson answered questions from the committee during three separate sessions and discussed “new ground” with the committee last month, although it was unclear what was discussed during the presentation.
Hutchinson did not want to risk accusing him of contempt of Congress to obstruct the investigation, and the change in representation is a sign that she is more willing to cooperate with the committee, a source familiar with the matter told CNN.
Her former boss, Meadows, was referred to the Department of Justice for possible allegations of contempt, but the Department of Justice eventually decided not to prosecute.
Hutchinson was originally represented by Stefan Pasantino, a lawyer with significant connections to people in Trump’s orbit.
She fired Passantino, the source said, and is now represented by Jody Hunt of Alston Bird.
