Celtics rumors: Brown, Durant, trade talks

Celtics forward Jaylen Brown was “confused” by a recent report claiming he has no intention of re-signing with Boston when his current contract expires in 2024, according to The Athletic’s Jared Weiss, who is hearing from sources that Brown denies this message behind closed doors.

As Weiss notes, it’s unlikely that Brown will sign a contract extension anytime soon, but that’s because his max salary on an extension will be far less than what he could earn if he reaches free agency and signs a new deal. this time.

Brown’s name came up in trade rumors again this offseason, as it did in 2018 when San Antonio shopped Kawhi Leonard and in 2019 when New Orleans shopped Anthony Davis. Despite those rumors, however, Brown wants to stay in Boston, Weiss wrote.

Here’s more on the Celtics:

  • Although Brown’s name has come up in past trade rumors involving star players, Bleacher Report’s Jake Fisher says the Celtics never actually made the former No. 3 pick available when Leonard was on the block in 2018 and only discussed internally the opportunity to offer Brown in 2019 after Davis requested a trade. The Celtics began to consider what they could get for Brown this January after a 23-24 start, but did not seriously consider moving him at the deadline, Fisher added. In other words, the talks with Kevin Durant represent the first time the club has seriously considered moving Brown.
  • In the same Bleacher Report story, Fisher says the Celtics’ most serious discussions with the Nets about Durant happened in early July, noting those talks are considered part of Brooklyn’s “first stage of ongoing negotiations” . Most trade talks surrounding the NBA “go to a momentary lull” after Summer League ends, according to Fisher.
  • Chris Forsberg of NBC Sports Boston, Kevin O’Connor of The Ringer and Gary Washburn of The Boston Globe broke down the rumors linking Durant to Boston, exploring whether it makes sense for the Celtics to make a big push for the star forward and assessing what they should be willing to give up. Washburn argues that the C’s should hold out and hang on to Brown, while O’Connor says he would likely be willing to give up both Brown and Marcus Smart to sign Durant.
  • Washburn, like Weiss, hears Brown is “invested” in Boston and wants to be a part of the Celtics’ future.
