Police responded to reports of a nightclub shooting shortly before 2:45 a.m. local time, Jeremy Eames, a spokeswoman for the Chattanooga Police Department, told CNN. Officers found many victims when they arrived and began providing medical care.
A total of 14 victims were shot dead while three others were hit by vehicles trying to escape the scene, Eames said. Of the three deaths, two were caused by gunshot wounds and one by injuries sustained after the victim was hit by a vehicle, he said.
Police believe many gunmen were involved. There are no suspects in custody.
The motive for the shooting is unclear, but authorities say the shooting was an isolated incident “in which one or more of the victims were targeted”.
