Chicago teenager Mia Maro’s father arrested for killing 17-year-old

Mohamed Almaru, the father of the slain Mia Maro, has been arrested and charged with first-degree murder in connection with the murder of his 17-year-old daughter, according to authorities.

Police found the deceased teenager at her family’s home in Tinley Park, a suburb of Chicago, around 5pm on Sunday after her aunt called 911 to report a possible death, Tinley Park Police Chief Matthew Walsh said during at a press conference on Tuesday, broadcast on FOX 32 Chicago.

Upon arrival at the home, authorities found her 42-year-old father, Mohamed Almaru, suffering from self-inflicted wounds to his wrists and throat. He also appears to have had “several drugs” in his system at the time, according to Walsh.

His 17-year-old daughter, who died, was found nearby on the lower level of the house. The Cook County Medical Examiner described Maro’s death as murder, but could not name a specific injury as the cause of her death.

Maro had “multiple injuries”, including “severe bruises all over her body” when police found her on Sunday. The medical examiner was uncomfortable marking an “injury” as the cause of her death, Walsh said, adding that investigators were unaware of previous domestic violence.

The 17-year-old was apparently one of several children in the house and probably the only girl, according to Walsh.

Almaru is currently being treated for his wounds in hospital, but is “not cooperating” with police and has not been “fully conscious”, Walsh said.

“People are traumatized by this. Absolutely tragic, “said the police chief.

Maro was a senior at Andrew High School and was due to graduate in the following weeks.

“On behalf of the entire village of Tinley Park, I would like to express my sincerest condolences to all who knew and loved Mia,” said Mayor Michael Glots. “By all indications, she was a beautiful young woman at the very beginning of her life, a life she will never be able to fulfill now. To her family, friends and classmates at Andrew High School, we mourn her passing with you.
