Chinese President Xi Jinping made a rare appearance in the restive Xinjiang region this week, his first visit there in more than eight years and his second trip in two weeks, aiming to show national unity after his Hong Kong tour as he seeks to extend his rule.
Early on Friday, state media released about 1½ minutes of footage from China Central Television showing Mr. Xi in government offices, a museum, classrooms and a shopping area in Xinjiang’s capital Urumqi. Mr Xi was greeted by musicians and dancers in dresses traditionally worn by members of the predominantly Muslim Uyghur minority, an ethnic group targeted by what the US and other Western governments say is a vast program of forced assimilation.
