Chris Evans defends Anthony Mackie as Captain America going forward

Anthony Mackie is set to take on the mantle of the new Captain America in his own movie, but amid speculation that Chris Evans could reprise the role … he says no chance.

News broke this week of Mackie’s involvement in the upcoming Captain America 4 film, with director Julius Ona reportedly set to direct. This, of course, comes after Maki’s Disney+ show, which ended with her taking the CA shield.

Sam Wilson is Captain America

You’d think that conclusion — which was made very clear on the show after Evans’ character, Steve Rogers, had already passed the torch at the end of “Endgame” — wouldn’t be up for debate… but apparently among some fans it is. And THR mentioned it in a thread.

In response to the uncertainty surrounding Evans’ possible involvement in the new film and the character, CE himself weighed in on Saturday … writing, “Sam Wilson is Captain America.”

The reason this is a big deal… it seems to stop the trolls who, to this day, aren’t cool with the idea of Mackie continuing to be the titular superhero — a controversy that’s been brewing since 2019, when he was officially tapped as Chris’ successor Evans.

Much of the pushback against AM is downright racist…with many saying that a black person simply shouldn’t be allowed to take on the role (even though it happens in the comics).

Now, Chris seems to confirm that he’s done with Captain America and that Mackie will continue exclusively as the character… without Chris involved going forward. Frankly, it makes sense logistically – Evans is portrayed as an old dude in the final Avengers film… so having him in the plot other than just a cameo feels unlikely/unnecessary.

By the way, Mackie as the new Captain America carries a lot of weight. The show reveals – based on an earlier comic series that is canon – that the fictional story behind Captain America is dark, with the US government testing/enhancing the superserum that gives him his powers over Black Soldiers while Cap is under ice control . So, technically, Captain America was built on the backs of black people … a metaphor for our own real-life history, some say.

So … kind of poetic that Mackie/Sam is the one creating a new legacy. Yet the conversation strangely continues about who has the “right” to follow in Chris’ footsteps, even after he has spoken.
