Plans for this year’s Meet Me on Bernard program, aimed at attracting more pedestrian traffic and downtown business, are being shaped by some new wrinkles added this season.
Meet Me on Bernard runs from July 1 to September 5, 2022, when the road will be closed to vehicles from Sails to St. Paul Street.
The closure, which dates back to the COVID-19 pandemic, transforms Bernard Ave. as a bustling pedestrian mall where residents and visitors can enjoy a classic Kelowna summer, including outdoor dining, many local shops, live music, public art and more.
This year, the Kelowna Center Association, Kelowna Tourism and the City of Kelowna are asking for a presentation to be part of the Meet Me on Bernard pop-up program.
“Whether you’re an artist looking for a unique place to showcase your work, a business owner looking for creative ways to join the community, or part of a non-profit organization with a great idea to share, the pop-up program is your chance to bring out his passionate street project, ”said Chris Babcock, event manager in Kelowna.
Applications can be submitted for pop-ups that improve the space for events with positive, family-oriented activities. Ideas include organizing a fashion show to show off your latest products, holding a fitness class or demonstrating a unique skill. Successful applicants will have access to a 10-foot to 20-foot stretch to host an event of their choice. Pop-ups will be located along 400 and 500 blocks on Bernard Avenue.
“Meet Me on Bernard is rethinking Kelowna’s main street as a lively community platform,” Babcock said. “By enabling local organizations, business owners and individuals to share their work directly with residents and visitors, the pop-up program enlivens the street while building community and supporting the sustainability of downtown businesses.”
Pop-ups can be scheduled Monday through Friday, noon to 4:00 p.m., 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., or noon to 8:00 p.m.
