The southern lanes of Highway 99 in Richmond, as well as the Cambie Road overpass, were closed for several hours on Wednesday afternoon after a truck driver crashed into the overpass.
It appears that the driver hit the overpass with the load of their trailer, which also fell back onto the pickup, lubricating its front end and windshield. It is not clear what the truck was carrying.
According to Richmond RCMP Cpl. Ian Henderson, the closing was expected to continue into the evening.
“Engineers need to take a good look at the overpass and make sure it’s safe for everyone,” Henderson said.
He said the accident caused a lot of traffic jams on nearby routes, including Knight Street and Highway 91.
“We were lucky that no one was injured in the accident, although there appear to be reports that a worker in the area may have been injured during the clean-up operation.
Emergency services confirmed that one person had been transported to hospital, but no further details were available.

The photos show a significant impact area on the 4.5-meter concrete overpass.
Drivers traveling south can bypass the area by taking Exits 4 Road or Shell Road, according to the Richmond RCMP. Traffic north on Highway 99 was not affected by the accident.
