Coast Guard: Boats collide in Florida, 2 killed, 10 rescued

MIAMI – Two people were killed and 10 others had to be rescued when their boats collided at night near Key Biscayne in South Florida, the US Coast Guard and local authorities said.

The Coast Guard said a man involved in the collision had notified the agency of the crash around 10:30 p.m. Friday night.

Two bodies were found in the ensuing rescue operation, one from the Miami Beach Coast Guard Station and the other from the Miami Dade Fire Department, officials said. The Coast Guard said in a statement that one of its air crews in the MH-65 Dolphin helicopter played a key role in responding to emergencies.

A rescue swimmer was also sent to help two seriously injured, one of whom was transferred to the Jackson Memorial Medical Center for care. Another nine survivors have been sent to another hospital for treatment, authorities said. Their names were not disclosed.

“On behalf of the Coast Guard and our partner agencies, we would like to extend our sincerest condolences to the families and friends who have lost their loved ones,” said Lieutenant Commander. Benjamin Tuckhorn, Coordinator of the Miami Coast Guard Search and Rescue Mission.

He said the Coast Guard and local first aid services had worked extensively on the search and rescue.

The clash is being investigated by the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission.
