Crime in New York: Mass shooting in Haarlem left 1 dead and many wounded

HARLEM, Manhattan (WABC) – Nine people were shot dead, one of them fatally, when a shooting broke out in Haarlem at night.

Seven men and two women between the ages of 21 and 42 were hit in the area of ​​Fifth Avenue and East 139th Street shortly after noon on Monday.

The victims were enjoying a late-night gathering when a shooting broke out.

A resident of the area told Eyewitness News that there were so many shots that he could not believe his ears.

“I was sitting in my living room and everything I heard was sporadic shots,” she said. It was like Tooth, Tooth, Tooth! And then he stopped and stood up again, “Broom, hum!” You know, there were so many shots. At first I thought it was a fireworks display. and then I thought, “No, it can’t be.”

Police were initially told that two groups were shooting at each other at the scene.

“We just think it was a gathering, a barbecue, of that nature,” said NYPD Deputy Chief Brian McGee.

Five of the victims were initially found shot dead on a footpath above Harlem River Drive. The others arrived at the hospital in Haarlem.

A 21-year-old man has been pronounced dead at Lincoln Hospital.

The other eight victims are thought to be safe.

Many of the victims were shot in the torso. There were also injuries to people’s legs, backs and even toes.

A pistol was found on the spot.

No arrests were made immediately and it is unclear what caused the shooting.

Police are asking the public for help as the investigation into the incident continues.
