Darlington MP Peter Gibson is turning against Boris and becoming the latest to resign

The Darlington MP is the latest to resign today.

Peter Gibson has said he no longer believes Boris Johnson is the best man to lead the country.

Mr Gibson was Parliamentary Private Secretary to the Department for International Trade.

In his resignation letter, he said: “Three years ago this week at our party’s leadership election, I decided to support you, believing that you are the best person for our party, our country and for Darlington. It is with deep sadness that I no longer feel that this is the case.”

He added: “On Saturday last week I marched with the LGBT+ Conservatives at London Pride. As a gay MP this should have been a liberating, enjoyable experience, instead because of the damage our party has done to itself by not including trans people in the conversion therapy ban, it has been a humbling experience and signals to me that huge damage that was so unnecessary brought about after years of hard work by many to recover Section 28 damages.

“I am deeply saddened to see so many people of principle leave government, and while I wish it were not so, I feel that my personal integrity, loyalty to my constituents and to our party means that I must too.” ”

He added: “It is of the utmost importance that the Prime Minister’s office presents all the high standards required of public life, which I do not believe is the case at the moment.”
