WASHINGTON – Democrats fought over where to turn their legislative response to the Supreme Court’s decision to end federal protection against abortion after Republicans thwarted previous attempts by the party to pass a law guaranteeing access to abortion.
Democrats, who control both houses of Congress and the White House, have tried twice this session to pass the Women’s Health Act, which will establish a nationwide right to abortion before fetal viability, usually about 23 to 24 weeks. But versions of the bill have garnered too little support to clear the Senate, and some party lawmakers have made it clear that they are now considering other legislation.
