A man was taken into custody after a multi-vehicle crash in the 3300 block of Cook Street in Saanich on Thursday.
The man was arrested with no public safety concerns at this time, according to police, who said Saanich Road is likely to be closed to traffic “for some time.”
Pictures captured by CHEK News show various emergency crews, including police, paramedics and firefighters attending the scene, with debris strewn across the road.
Multiple vehicles were damaged, including a red Audi SUV as well as a white SUV. A third vehicle could be seen on the side of the road in some bushes.
Police have not confirmed any information, but a witness told CHEK News that he saw the immediate aftermath of the crash.
Norm Sedore was in his backyard when he heard a crash and ran out to find three damaged vehicles, two of which appeared to be parked.
Sedore said he then approached the driver of the crashed Audi to see how he was doing.
“I pulled the driver’s side airbag and that’s when I was presented with a butcher knife,” he said, adding that the driver started swearing at him and told him to get out.
Sedore also noted that there was a black poodle in the backseat of the vehicle.
Arriving police confronted the man and tried to calm him down, but he became more agitated, prompting police to use less lethal rounds, Sedore said.
“It just seemed to fire him up,” he said. The man then stabbed himself with the knife and removed his clothes before being hit with another bullet — police fired about 12 to 15 shots in total, according to Sedore.
The man eventually passed out and was taken into custody, he said.
